Brazil – Paraty

Paraty is a small colonial town, a national historic monument with well-preserved buildings on its pedestrian-only streets. Stunning white colonial architecture, postcard-worthy mountains and waters, it’s hard to forget. The colonial center is remarkable not only for its architecture, but also for its lack of automobile traffic. The cobblestone streets are still traversed by horses towing carriages, which gives it a timeless sensation.

Built below sea level and right next to the sea, Paraty transforms into a sort of mini-Venice during the day.  If you’re in the center at the right times, you will see the flooded streets reflecting the beautifully painted buildings.

Most important, just loose yourself in the city center for a few hours. Next, wander over to the port to watch the beautiful view and boats.

This deserves to be mentioned more than once, try the caipirinha!  The syrupy, strong bite of a well-crafted caipirinha on its home turf, and in Paraty it’s known to be one of the best in the country. Have a try at Paraty33, a nice bar with live music at night and one of the best caipirinhas I’ve had so far! I also recommend taking a few tapas.

For breakfast or brunch, I would definitely recommend Manuê Sucos! Budget friendly incredible food, from omelettes to cakes and dobrados (toasted flatbread sandwiches). There are a few gluten-free options too, and you’ll be eating with a mix of tourists and locals, which is always nice.
