Sweden/Gothenburg – Southern Archipelago

One of the best things about Gothenburg is the archipelago! Off the coast of the city, it’s a maritime playground easily reached by public transportation. The archipelago is made up of more than 20 islands and is split in a northern collection of islands and a southern one. The southern part is famous for being carfree, so I went for this one. It’s beautiful, relaxing; a spectacular natural scenery and somewhere to unwind. It’s really worth at least a day visit!

It’s very easily accessible using the city’s tram and ferry system: catch the 11 tram at the Brunnsparken stop, ride to the end of the line, last stop at Saltholmen (about 35 minutes ride), and board a ferry. The ticket for the tram also included the ferry, a day pass costs about 85SEK. Ferries to and from the islands vary time wise but it’s roughly every hour to the bigger islands. You should still carefully note when ferries are returning to the mainland.

They provide information booklets at the port to help you decide which island to visit, as well as a map with the ferries’ itineraries. To be honest, it was a bit confusing so take the time to have a look before taking the wrong ferry! Even if you can easily come back, it’s a waste of time.

I decided to go for Asperö and Donsö, and didn’t regret it! You’ll need a day for the whole excursion, but you might be able to squeeze in third island if you’re fast (and don’t take the wrong ferry like I did). You can really island-hop from one to another!

Donsö

The first thing to greet you at Donsö is the red fisherman’s huts. The island is one of the largest ones in the archipelago and is an important fishing and ship-owning community; the harbour is at the heart of the island and has been an important part of life here. You’ll easily find lovely walking trails by the water or into small woods, it’s very tranquil.

There is a small supermarket at the harbor but isn’t always open, so I’d suggest you take your picnic from the mainland with you and find a nice spot to enjoy it on the island. One lookout point that is well worth a visit is Radarberget, where you get a fantastic view over the island and sea.

Asperö

Asperö is a small island, it has around 450 inhabitants but picturesque settlements. The charming harbor and houses are pleasure enough but you’ll also find some walking trails to go around. I’d really suggest climbing up the Valen hill, where you have a splendid view over the port of Gothenburg.
