The typical foods of Brazil are a mixture of influences stemming from Africa, India and Portugal.
- Açai: the açai berry has been pushed into the spotlight with its superfood status and incredible health properties. But it’s also SUPER good! It’s served as a sweet sorbet, often accompanied with banana or strawberry and granola. It can be bought from almost any street snack bar and is often sold on the beach as well, a must have!
- Coxinha: shredded chicken and mashed potato, shaped like a thigh and covered in golden breadcrumbs. Delicious snack!
- Picanha: top part of sirloin steak BBQ
- Pão de queijo: cheese bread, the dough is a simple mix of tapioca flour and soft cheese. Not super tasty but filling.
- Cassava: also called yuca or manioc chips
- Bacalhau: little fried cod balls from the Portuguese cuisine influence
- Tapioca: tasty and healthy alternative to bread. Made from the starch of the cassava root, it’s a great option for those who avoid eating gluten. It’s cooked like a pancake then wrapped around a choice of filling: ham, cheese, chicken, nutella, banana with condensed milk or coconut.
- Feijoada: black beans, white rice, pork, bacon, cooked ground meat and sausage
- Cachaça: made from fermented sugarcane juice and is best known as the fiery kick in caipirinhas
- Caipirinhas: obviously, the best-known cocktail from Brazil made of cachaça, lime and sugarcane. Careful the stomach if you’re sensitive to acidity.
