Cuenca is one of Ecuador’s most important and beautiful colonial city. Dating from the 16th century, Cuenca’s historic center, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a peaceful place to visit. Many people say that Cuenca looks a lot like a European city because of the Spanish colonial architecture.

Enjoy a walk through beautiful Calderon Park, feel overwhelmed at the sheer size and splendour of the Cathedral of the Immaculate (knows as the New Cathedral), sit and people-watch at Plaza de Calderon, get list on Paseo 3 de Noviembre and look at all the French architecture on Calle Bolivar.

Head to the Mercado 9 de Octubre, one of the many markets, to have some delicious local food, then to the Mercado de artesanias rotary, just a few steps away to buy some local souvenirs.
For a quick and cheap bite, I’d suggest passing by Santo Cielo Pizza for a good pizza by the (big) slice.
