Argentina/El Calafate – Perito Moreno Glaciar

But of course, the number one attraction of El Calafate is the Perito Moreno Glaciar! You can either go directly there and walk along the terrasses. You’ll enjoy the panoramic view from afar for hours, trust me. You have different paths, easy and less.

Or you can go a bit crazy and book a mini trekking ON the glaciar!

Starting at 7am, there’s a 2h drive to the glaciar. The entrance to the park is 600 pesos (cash only). Then a little walk with different explanations about its formation. And then the real fun starts! You put on the studs and starts walking on the glaciar. It’s a bit strange at the beginning and you have to get used to taking wide steps not to get tangled into the stripes (rookie mistake) but it gets easier and it’s really impressive. It’s a really easy walk, no particular effort needed, and lasts about 1,5 hours. Do take layers though, the temperature varies very quickly! The two guides explain a lot about the glaciar, it’s really interesting, and you get nice views! And little wink at the end: you get a whisky “on the rocks” with an astonishing view of the glaciar.

You then get time to have lunch (you need to bring your own, nothing is available on site), and watch the glaciar. You need to listen to it crack and watch for big pieces of ice falling. The noise and view is breathtaking! I could have stayed hours just waiting for a piece to fall..

You then have an hour at the terrasses to enjoy the view of the other side which is also nice, and then back to the hotel. I really recommend he experience, even though it’s a bit pricey, I don’t regret it for a second! If you’re up for more challenge, there’s also the Big I’ve but it was closed in May because of the winter season.

Hielo Adventura is the only agency allowed to do it so no need to look around or start negotiating the 3300 pesos per person, transfer included (I think it’s 2500 without the transfer). You can book it through you hotel though.
