Uruguay – Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento, only one ferry ride away from Buenos Aires, is an irresistibly picturesque town. You can take 3 different boat companies, I used Buquebus which was good and had an express ferry that took us to Colonia in 1,5 hours.

The best way to visit Colonia is to go to the Barrio Historico (historical neighborhood) by foot or by bike. The narrow cobbled streets are sure to win your heart. Walk around the paved streets, stop for a local Norteña beer on a terrasse and visit the lighthouse (25 pesos).

For a nice lunch, I recommend the Drugstore (Calle de Portugal, 174, 12pm-00am) where you can order a few tapas and enjoy the sun on the terrasse.

Once you’ve visited the city, head to the riverfront, a perfect spot for spectacular sunsets.

When your stomach is craving dinner, go to Charco Bistro, the Best restaurant in town (de San Pedro 116)! It’s part of the Charco Hotel, you’ll have to find the entrance as you need to go through the garden. But the place is great, very elegant yet cozy, and the food is to die for. You should probably make a reservation on weekends and during the summer.

Its proximity to Buenos Aires draw thousands of Argentine visitors, especially in summer, which explains the (very) high prices. If you don’t want to change money for just a day or two, keep in min that you can pay everything in dollars or Argentinian pesos.
