If you’ve never heard of Astrid y Gastón, it’s time you did! Number 7 in the 50 best Latin America restaurants, 33rd in the 50 best restaurants worldwide, it was founded by Gastón Acurio and his wife Astrid Gutsche and relocated to its current home at the palatial Casa Moreyra in 2014. The well awarded restaurant is responsible for helping transform contemporary Peruvian cuisine to what it is today.
Gastón contributed to the creation of Cocina Novoandina, a style of cuisine which combines traditional ingredients and flavor combinations from Peru and the Andean region with modern cooking techniques. He added a mixture of international styles and flavors to further push the culinary traditions in Peru, including Asian influences and the Mediterranean cooking styles which he had picked up on his travels in Europe.
The elegant high-ceilinged grandeur of the 300 years old hacienda mixed with minimalist décor, the restaurant also houses a bar, private rooms, 5 kitchens, a beautiful patio and a herb garden. The work of art in the patio enlighten a real tree with colorful ribbons, give the place a warm and welcoming feeling.
I haven’t had the pleasure of getting the menú de degustación but the taste of some of his dishes already convinced me… I do recommend the dim sum cuy (guinea pig in a asian soft bread, a sweet and sour mix just amazing).
Prices: around 40 soles for starters and 80 soles for main courses
